A chiller and its cooling tower do one job together: moving a building's heat outside. Provincial Refrigeration cleans and services cooling towers and looks after the chillers they serve, across Edmonton and surrounding areas. The line is answered 24/7: (780) 405-7314. Call, or request service and tell us the equipment.
Water leaves a cooling tower as vapour, but the minerals it carried stay behind as scale. The tower is also open to the air, so dust and debris settle in the basin, and warm, wet surfaces grow biofilm, which can shelter bacteria such as Legionella. Cleaning removes that buildup, and Provincial Refrigeration services the tower itself as well.
That Legionella risk is why our technicians clean in full personal protective equipment. We also take water samples for testing, to confirm the water treatment is doing its job.
Tell us the make and size of the tower and the building it serves, and we will scope the job.

Even a healthy chiller suffers when its tower is fouled. The tower sheds less heat, warmer water comes back, and the chiller has to work harder to hold the same temperature. That extra load shows up as higher energy use and as a chiller that struggles on the hottest days. When the complaint is warm water or a tripping chiller, the cause can sit in either machine, so one contractor looking at both saves a second call.
Provincial Refrigeration services air-cooled and water-cooled chillers of any type and size, from small draft beer chillers to large hydronic heating and cooling systems. Scroll, reciprocating, screw and centrifugal compressors are all covered; the one exception is systems that run on ammonia refrigerant. Glycol chillers of all types and sizes are supplied as well.
Nearly every chiller moves its heat through glycol, and some small indoor units use water, so the fluid in the loop gets the same attention as the machine. On-site analysis covers colour, odour, freezing point, pH, flow rates, feed tank operation and air purging, and a sample can go to the lab for conductivity, nitrite concentration, alkalinity, viscosity and ISO particle count.

Size decides whether a chiller needs a cooling tower. Smaller systems, such as those in breweries and senior homes, are usually air-cooled. As capacity grows, chillers move to water cooling with a tower, so towers serve the larger plants: high-rises, multi-storey complexes, institutions, campuses, hotels and large manufacturing sites. Chillers also run in restaurants, bakeries, production facilities and condominium buildings, and in process cooling for CNC machines and injection molding.

Provincial Refrigeration has run commercial HVAC and refrigeration service in Edmonton for 25 years, family-run since 2001, and holds a 4.7 rating across 40 Google reviews. Technicians tend to stay, many for up to 20 years. Service covers Edmonton and the surrounding areas.
Clearing what a tower collects in service: sediment in the basin, mineral scale, and biofilm on its wet surfaces. Technicians work in full personal protective equipment because of the Legionella risk, and we take water samples for testing to confirm the water treatment is doing its job. The job is scoped to the tower, so call with the make and size.
A fouled tower sheds less heat and returns warmer water to the chiller, which then has to work harder to hold the same temperature.
No. Air-cooled chillers, common on smaller systems, reject heat through their own coils and fans, so there is no tower to clean. As capacity grows, chillers usually switch to water cooling and send their heat to a cooling tower, and then both machines need attention.
Air-cooled and water-cooled chillers of any type and size, with scroll, reciprocating, screw or centrifugal compressors. The one exception is systems that run on ammonia refrigerant. Glycol chillers are supplied too, with on-site and lab testing of the fluid available.
